Have Pirates ever stood on Formby Beach?
I thought you'd like to see this image taken during a visit to Formby Beach three years ago.
It's an imaginative use of driftwood found on the beach tied together with another small fragment of 'flotsam and jetsam'. I love the words on each side of the signpost. To the left 'Rancid Annie's Cafe' and to the right 'Dead Man's Gulch'.
I like to think that the sign was part of an exciting game of 'Pirates and buried treasure'.
Incidentally, this handmade sign is of a type very popular in the past, similar to fingers used to pointing at something or showing directions, this design, frequently used in old road signs, became known as a 'Fingerposts'.
Formby had many such fingerposts and signs like this can still be found in old photographs at major junctions like Cross Green or at The Grapes.
