This blog publishes information about local Events, Selected  Local Reports and local Offers  in partnership with the Guardian Media group.

Young Photographer of the Year 2012 Competition Announced

The Young Photographer of the Year 2012 competition has been announced. Organised by the Rotary Club of Formby it's open to all young photographers under the age of 17 on 1 January 2012.

There are two sections, a Junior Section: 11 years old and under and a Senior Section: 12 to 16 years old

There is no set subject theme any photograph can be entered. Photographic prints in either colour or black and white may be submitted from digital images or from film.

Entry is free but is restricted to children either resident in Formby or attending school in Formby.

There are cash prizes in each section and the closing date for entries is 17 June 2012

The presentation of awards will take place during the 'Formby Live' weekend on Sunday 8 July at the swimming pool. The successful entrants will be notified of the details by 25 June.

Formby Event Features In The Guardian

The Guardian Newspaper has featured one of Formby's traditional Easter events on it's web site. 

Guardian Travel has set up a dedicated online noticeboard to share Easter events across the UK – check it out at easterweekend.n0tice.com.

There's already details of today's Footloose Food Walk in beautiful rural Lancashire, a chance for children to spend the day with Thomas the Tank Engine in Yorkshire and an egg hunt with a difference for adults in Bath – with famously grumpy old man Arthur Smith plus many more.

This follows the development of a new online notice board by the Guardian Media Group. Formbyfirst participated in 'beta' tests some months ago.

The product is now live and I have incorporated it into this blog. The 'Events, Reports and Offers' links in the navigation bar above illustrate it's use.

 

FormbyFirst is Collaborating with The Guardian

Since yesterday the journalistic Twitterati around the world have been very busy commenting about The Guardian Media Groups project - n0ticeboard.

 

One of the most interesting trials could be a new hyperlocal service called n0tice that the company is putting through its paces.
The site, which is currently running in invite-only beta, is an attempt to create a publishing platform based on location — and it uses the metaphor of a community noticeboard to get there. People can sign up to create their own board, customize it, leave messages, place small ads, anything they like. In a way it harks back to the days of BBS, but with all the bells and whistles you might expect from a website in 2011.

Some months ago a few UK local blogs joined a 'beta' test group for this project, FormbyFirst was among that group. Since then individual bloggers have been adding examples of Reports, Events and Offers in each of our local catchment areas. The web site is continuing to develop. 

At moment I can't tell you when the service will go live or not, but I do have an 'invite' to give to someone. Write to me, perhaps you too can be part of this new social media world.
